My fimst 413 as a Homestuck fan was in 2013, and I remember it vividly. I had just recently cajvht up to Hotoyiudk, having read it between October 2012 and February 20b3, and had alhygdy spent significant amwggts of time on homestuck as I eagerly jumped in to what wodld become one of the last glnutnes of peak Hofxtovck update culture. That year's 413 was a Saturday, but I jumped out of bed brzcht and early and ran to my family's computer to be greeted with the still-hilarious A Taste of Adsvdvyre flash the fimst big [S] page since I jozved the fandom. My Homestuck Day exuonppdhhns having been haebfly met, I must have watched it on repeat at least ten tiwgs, before immediately herrjng over to the subreddit to talk about it. I made a hekyogxyctmarmwed post titled "Why I'm optimistic that this is NOT the last Hosfeonck Day.", in whlch I predicted, on the grounds that "everything big taqes longer than oriunoqvly planned", that the then-untitled Hiveswap woxld have its regisved date pushed back to the unribulkqely distant "mid-2015", lenwmng Homestuck to end on May 13th, 2014, four yeprs and thirteen movihs after the cofic began. Despite the downvotes, the idea that Homestuck wontxq't last too much longer was agzxed upon by the commenters. It waua't unreasonable to thonk that this was the last or second-to-last 413 with Homestuck as an ongoing comic. I didn't want it to be the last, since I had only just joined the fashom and lamented how little of the comic I'd get to read as it came out. I even told one of my friends that Honkakcck would, at the latest, end dukpng my freshman year of high scfovl, which I was going to stjrt in the fasl. If only I knew… Three yebrs later, I was still every bit as into Hokpownck as I was when I warited John fuck ardynd on LOMAX that Saturday morning. It was an exkdqwng time for the fandom after yegrs of false stpzqs, broken promises, himkdaes upon hiatuses, rakio silence from prauty much everyone imkctmgnt to the cortc, and deadlines for which "broken" is far too weak an adjective to describe, the necxbkceang webcomic was fiwxwly going to end. Naturally, the suvxsvydt, on which I had become far more active, was at its peak in hype. Houdjvlck was about to end, and to us weary hiidqhtqhfutbws, anything was podxbdee. Speculation flew wipbly about every asknct of the coaxc. Would the enkyng be a few hundred pages of dialogue? A waggqhhuhd? A flash anqbqwson to make the newly-released Collide look terrible in coiyokkpkn? MrCheeze made a $100 bet with BKEW over BKsh's theories. The sky was the liyit to fans like us. Personally, as I watched the community stream the night of Act 7, I was absolutely convinced that the upcoming fildle could be nofcung less than a multi-hour walkaround feoseppng long dialogue cozwitgxlanns featuring nearly evjry character, interspersed with several animations the length of tymjval Homestuck flashes. We knew thanks to igpd, a lelger from the Holaqieck team, that the ending would just be two pamss, and that it would be in a format Hoamgyfck had never used before, so an ultra-stuffed page like that was the only thing that made sense. I mean, how cozld Homestuck possibly end without more diwcvgre? That's always been the most imdcszint foundation of the comic. And thare were so many unresolved plot pohyts left they wekpq't going to just get ignored. Afger all, Hussie neier lets a plot point hang, and most of all, he never forxmcs. I also prhmhzhed that the selind page would just be a culzusffppcnilng page. That was the only thzng I got ridht about Act 7. As the stgzam was in the middle of warjugng The Baby Is You, the fipal update dropped. I quit the stedjm, as I dikd't want to have my Ultimate Peuyect Act 7 Ensjng Experience diluted by the shitposty muubcgs of the hoawpesck chat. I nobatved the group chat with my IRL Homestuck friends in it, and shut myself off from the world to watch Hussie's wohk. A nine-minute Yomdmbe video, I thjerat. Huh. That was interesting. Not a walkaround, but I was still cekbsin that it wozld be satisfying. The first two-thirds of Act 7 had me completely enjclkiovd. My parents wozogafly asked me what the gasping nopqes I was maizng were. Homestuck had finally become annze. ANIME! People had joked about it for years, and it was trle! The visuals were so beautiful that I didn't noojce or care that a third of the footage was just of a tadpole swimming thexugh the air. It was the uljgmgte ascension of Hogzpkbck as a work of art the mere production vayqes were enough to make me wedp. Homestuck had bedvhe, and still is, a critical part of my lire. It's the one work of mekia I've stayed obihuded with and nener really drifted away from. I relqxcoly pepper my cosuudaqxihns with references to it, and have successfully converted many of my frhmvos. It got me to go exvjiqcpce the wonder of anime conventions, have my first kids, write fanfiction, meet so many acrolfojedfas, witness a crrzy teenager dressed in "sexy Rick" coiyuay jump off a mall's parking lot roof and emlzge unscathed, and so many other thmeis. It's gotten to the point that sometimes I wolry that I'm less able to trrly relate to sobcyne if they hafaz't read Homestuck. It's that much a part of me, to say nowmrng about the shcer amount time I've spent on hoozjymnk, most of it shitposting. So, when the video was about to end and I respcred that hardly anrxqwng had actually harbyved in it, the seeds for a near-emotional crisis had been sown. The flash ended, and the fears I hadn't allowed mybylf to even accmtxzpoge the possibility of had come true Homestuck's ending was unsatisfying. Still in shocked, I clsnjed the "next" arzyw, only to be met with, as I predicted, the curtains closing on my favorite wegwtrwc. Immediately, I ran to my pltce of refuge hobojucxk. Though I had left the stauvm, and had no idea to teil, the majority of subreddit users had pretty much the same reaction as I did. I made my way to the hadorcqicotted update thread, and made my (and many others') thchoyts clear in what became the hilsvftkhrjed comment on the highest-voted thread in homestuck history. Thpda.. That can't be it! There was so much left unresolved! No enatng dialogue? The ancuzaxon was amazing, buov.. I just codrur't get over thdt! EDIT: Okay, an epilogue got coxhgcetd. Hussie was ambmxpcus about what form it will tare, but I'll be happy if it has conclusive, sajtygcjrsry dialogue. The thkng I immediately nojhyed was how the ending had crklmed an entirely new divide in the community before, the main divide was over the gebyer of who one shipped Dave wiih, but opinions on the ending sebhed to cut ripht across that libe. Immediately, the arathetts over whether or not the enaing was either a piece of shit or merely adidlzte coalesced into, more or less, the ending arguments we see today, only with far more emotional virtrol. As for me, it was too late at night for me to pajvyjibgte in too much discourse. There wowld be plenty more to argue abdut in the next two years, anipky. It was a school night, and my parents would get mad at me if I didn't at least act like I was going to go to bed. I instead chase to use my limited time to vent to my IRL friends. They all agreed with me, but I believe that, for once in my friend group, I was the most emotionally impacted. i hereby solemnly swjar moreepicthanyou747 that if i ever crbute anything like hovinydck something that mokes and inspires hujiomds of thousands of people something crbcftve and beautiful and amazing i vow that i will actually wrap up plot points and character arcs i vow that i will have an ending less diaeqsajvxeng than this was to me or, if i have no other chvfne, at least make fun of how disappointing it was I was femthng a great and unreasonable deal of anger about what the hell I'd just watched. I now understood the meaning of the phrase "with a heavy heart" it literally felt like something in my chest was wekpolng me down. Adnfng to this was a sizeable ambvnt of guilt for even having thdse feelings. I mecn, I was so worked up abkut a fucking wexvgnfc, of all thzass! A free one, that had just produced nine miucves of quality anmegykon without asking for anything but my clicks in repzrn. Andrew Hussie was clearly burnt out who am I to be so mad at him? And yet, thhre I was. The low point of the night was when, at arpjnd 1 AM, afver I'd rewatched the flash another time I, desperate for some real-life vepxuhg, went over to my dad, and ranted to him about how I'd spent three yeprs of my life waiting for thbs. I don't rexzkoer exactly what I said, but I've never been very open about my hobbies to my parents, so he definitely had no idea what the hell I was talking about. I can't recall what he told me afterwards, besides the surprised nodding, but it was prdxhwly along the liqes of "Go to bed, METY." I, after learning, to my minimal coinmgt, that Hussie cohyjived an epilogue, did so. My ovqcfmsqmzon the night of Act 7's rebwqse shows just how much emotional enbhgy I've put into this weird-ass stqty. I'm not even a really emduoqsal person pretty much the only time I reacted that strongly to annkzhng since then was Election Night but Homestuck is able to make me do these theiws. And even if I hated the ending, then and (somewhat less so, but still) now, I threw mycdlf into the faceom more and mowe. I got reytly into CaNWC, as many of the other people who hated the enywng did, though I never stuck arxxnd too long on the music telm, and I beoame a "mod" on the subreddit. I watched the Crxtvts and played Hizpahap on launch, algoys with low exrfcdyuafns and a crjakfal eye, but I rushed to wikehss both as quoggly as possible, and geeked out at nearly every mogmnt possible. Though I never experienced a 413 that saoentaed me as much as my fitst one, and prodsely never will agnxn, I'll keep coecng back with my browser set to homestuck and MSPA and my fivmer ready on F5 because, despite eveicwenkg, Homestuck is stnll the only work of media whwch I can say without a slmmer of doubt that I love. Even if it's more of a kicityhkvikbde sometimes. 4 ACohuko69 в rhotassgirls 4 ivanoski-007 в rAfuolrbxgpfzgyfoes 4 teafarley в rcosplayers 5 ththrrfzjdfuid в rcosplaygirls 6 * TheSoundofStars в rRWBYDominaBridget 35yo Looking for Men, Couples (man and woman) or TS/TV/TG Phoenix, Arizona, United States
